About us/ Quienes Somos?
Founded by Jose and Maria Rosa, The Gifted Kids Educational Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on advocating for the Arts and offering students of all backgrounds and nationalities the opportunity to participate in educational and enrichment programs and activities.
Having been raised by a single mom in Humacao, Puerto Rico, Jose lived in a neighborhood inundated with high crime and few opportunities for children to excel. On several occasions Jose witnessed killings in his neighborhood where he walked to and from school on a daily basis. At the age of 9 Jose had the opportunity to attend an all arts school where his professor Pepe Torres provided mentoring for many students including Jose. Students attending this very special school were taught the discipline of mastering the instrument they were playing and were given opportunities to travel with the band to other countries at no cost to them. Jose traveled to and from school by taking buses often taking 1 ½ hours to arrive at school. Sometimes the professors would drive him back home after school. Thanks to the dedication of the staff at this very special school Jose excelled both in his studies and in playing percussion instruments. He wound up playing for the Symphony in Puerto Rico at the age of 13 and later had the opportunity to play with many artists and write several books. This experience changed the course of his life. While many youths around him were taking drugs and getting into trouble Jose was able to travel and help his mom with the bills. Many of the other students attending this school had similar life-changing experiences and most of them still keep in touch with each other even after many years. Maria's family immigrated to the United States when she was 2 with only her mother and brother. Despite the hardship her family endured, it was thanks to her family's dedication that Maria did not become involved in drugs or drop out of school. Because of their experience, Jose and Maria Rosa both know firsthand the importance of investing in our children and youth.
The Gifted Kids Educational Foundation is dedicated to inspiring children and youth to reach their potential. We believe that investing in our children and youth is vital for our future. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to reach their potential regardless of the background or nationality. For this reason, the Gifted Kids Educational Foundation is dedicated to making a positive impact on our children and youth.
